Documents Fund Development and Metadata Creation Department

  • Forms the information resource collections of the Lithuanian Library of Medicine.
  • Distributes received publications to the library and its structural units.
  • Maintains and edits the Lithuanian Library of Medicine electronic catalog.
  • Carries out general accounting of the library‘s collection and written-off documents.
  • Organizes the purchase of books and periodical subscriptions.
  • Provides consultations to healthcare institution libraries on collection development.
  • Catalogs newly received and retrospective documents.
  • Indexes and classifies documents in medicine and related sciences.
  • Develops the Lithuanian Library of Medicine authority file – the Authority Database – based on the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) of the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
  • Technically processes and assigns call numbers to received documents.
  • Edits the Lithuanian Library of Medicine electronic catalog.
  • Provides consultations on document processing and bibliographic description.

Information Services and Learning Resource Department

  • Ensures user access to electronic health information sources.
  • Develops health information search skills among users and library staff.
  • Responds to user information inquiries.
  • Provides consultations on bibliographic referencing and edits reference lists.
  • Manages the Lithuanian Library of Medicine website and social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, blog LMBtau, YouTube, ISSUU).
  • Adds analitical records to the Lithuanian Library of Medicine electronic catalog.
  • Maintains the „Lithuanian Medical Professionals in the Diaspora“ card index.
  • Prepares and publishes bibliographies and informational publications about Lithuanian medical professionals on the website.
  • Organizes events and exhibitions.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with the public, fostering the Lithuanian Library of Medicine user community.
  • Implements and maintains new and existing technologies, ensuring cybersecurity in the library.

Center of Medical Nomenclatures and Classifiers

  • Manages and maintains medical nomenclatures and classifiers at the national level.
  • Organizes and coordinates the use and applicability of medical nomenclatures and classifiers within Lithuanian health information systems and in health data exchange processes between Lithuania and European Union countries.
  • Provides consultations and information regarding the use of medical nomenclatures and classifiers.
  • Organizes and oversees the translation of international medical nomenclatures and classifiers into the Lithuanian language.
  • Coordinates the application and use of semantic compatibility for textual descriptions, data, and their conversions used in the digital health system in Lithuania.
  • Carries out the sublicensing process of medical nomenclatures and classifiers in Lithuania.
  • Ensures appropriate protection and use of the intellectual property of medical nomenclatures and classifiers within the country.

Customer Service Department

Subscription desk

  • Library users are registered, and the user registration database is managed.
  • Visitors are informed about the services provided by the Lithuanian Library of Medicine.
  • Assistance is provided with searching the library‘s electronic catalog; user inquiries are answered via email and telephone.
  • Payments are accepted for services listed in the paid services catalog.
  • Documents are loaned and return deadlines are monitored.

Reading room

  • Current year newspapers and journals, reference materials, and the most popular textbooks and books are collected.
  • Documents are copied, scanned, and printed.
  • Documents are ordered from Lithuanian and foreign libraries trough interlibrary loan (tba@lmb.lt).
  • Users are assisted in the internet reading room; consultations are provided on searching databases.

Storage room

  • The storerooms house and preserve documents on medicine and related sciences from the 16th to the 21st centuries.
  • All library collections are closed-access; documents are ordered via the library‘s electronic catalog.
  • Ordered documents are delivered to the subscription desk or reading room and returned to the storage afterward.
  • Outdated publications are selected for withdrawal; the collection is replenished with new documents.
  • Exhibitions of newly acquired publications are organized.

Facilities Management Department

  • Responsible for the Lithuanian Library of Medicine material and technical infrastructure.
  • Oversees the library‘s heating and electrical systems.
  • Safeguards library property and ensures compliance with the regulations for the protection of material assets.
  • Ensures proper maintenance and cleanliness of the premises.
  • Responsible for occupational safety, fire safety, and the condition of the fire alarm system.
  • Organizes the procurement of construction, office, and household supplies.
